Ethiopia’s transition to democracy appears increasingly at risk, as the death of popular singer Hachalu Hundessa last month unleashed mass protests, ethnic-based violence, and deadly government reprisals. Worsening regional tensions over control of the Nile River, an economic crisis exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the indefinite postponement of national elections originally scheduled for next month compound the challenges facing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who early in his tenure was hailed for his commitments to national reconciliation and political reform.
