Ambassador Liberata Mulamula is Tanzania’s New Minister of Foreign Affairs

IAfS Associate Director Liberata Mulamula was sworn in on April 1 as a Member of Parliament and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tanzania.
Professor Mulumula joined the Elliott School of International Affairs in 2015, as a Visiting Scholar and Acting Director of the Institute for African Studies.  Previously, she had a long career as a diplomat, serving as Tanzanian Ambassador to the United States, Senior Diplomatic Adviser to former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete. She also served as the First Secretary of the Regional Inter-governmental Organization for Peace, Stability, and Development in the Great Lakes Region, and in 2015 received the Order of the United Republic of Tanzania 2015 Award for Distinguished Public Service. Throughout her distinguished career, Minister Mulamula has been a champion of peace-building and conflict prevention, and an outspoken advocate for the empowerment of women and girls
While at GW, she was a frequent speaker on issues of peace, security, gender, and diplomacy. She taught classes on Women and Leadership in Africa and on Multilateral and Conference Diplomacy in Global Politics and served as a mentor to countless GW students.
